Rafael González cigars were first trademarked during the 1930s, though the brand had been around for almost a decade before. The original target market was predominantly the British, but their cigars are enjoyed around the world by smoking enthusiasts. These cigars are traditionally created by hand with a long-filler, although some select examples do possess a short filler instead to imbue the range with extra diversity. The Rafael Gonzalez Perlas is particularly popular for its nutty and sweet flavour.
The cigars feature mild strength blends of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region. All sizes are made by the Tripa Larga, Totalmente a Mano – long filler, totally hand made technique bar one, which is Tripa Corta, Totalmente a Mano – short filler, totally hand made. The short filler size also incorporates tobacco leaves from the Semi Vuelta region.
An innovative brand, Rafael Gonzalez was the first to use the term ‘Lonsdale’. This was first used in the cigar world in honour of Lord Lonsdale, a famed cigar and sports aficionado of this period. It refers to a cigar of 6 ½ inches by 42 gauge and has since become a common word that is used in the industry.
