Trinidad is named not after the country but after the 16th Century World Heritage Site city of La Santísima Trinidad on Cuba’s south coast. Trinidad dates back to 1969 but like Cohiba was originally made only as gifts to foreign diplomats, not becoming widely available until as recently as 1998 and in small quantities only. Due to its exclusive beginnings, Trinidad is popular amongst many cigar aficionados who want to experience the quality that was deemed only for those of high authority.
For several years Trinidad was made at the famous El Laguito Cohiba factory, where its unique fragrant and aromatic medium flavoured blend of leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region was developed. By the end of 2004 demand for Trinidad had outstripped the production capacity at El Laguito and production was moved to Pinar del Rio City, the most important city of Vuelta Abajo.
Although the original diplomatic Trinidads were never sold in cigar stores, a few people will able to buy them at auction for exceptionally high prices. Now with a range of cigars available to the general public, try the Trinidad Reyes. This medium-bodied and full-flavoured cigar is enjoyed by many due to its intense and enjoyable flavours.
