Every time I light up a Juan Lopez Seleccion Especial, I’m reminded why it’s one of my favorites. Its flavors blend power with complexity. Let’s take a closer look at what makes it so special.

Look & Feel (16/20)

The Juan Lopez Seleccion Especial LCDH boasts a classic Cuban appearance, with its golden brown wrapper showing minor imperfections, such as visible veins. The construction is sturdy, though not flawless, with a slightly spongy feel in some spots.

Pre-Light (15/20)

On the pre-light draw, the cigar gives off earthy and slightly woody notes, with an understated aroma that doesn’t immediately captivate the senses. The cold draw is easy and reveals light notes of hay and toast. However, it lacks the complexity or richness found in more aromatic pre-light experiences.

Burn (14/20)

The burn performance of this cigar is where it falters slightly. Although it starts well, it can become uneven midway, requiring some touch-ups to maintain an even burn line. The ash is flaky at times, which might interrupt the enjoyment if you're expecting a consistent performance.

Flavor (17/20)

I noticed that the flavor of the Juan Lopez Seleccion Especial develops nicely, starting with rich, earthy tones accompanied by a hint of spice. As the cigar progresses, sweeter undertones of caramel and cocoa come through, adding a pleasant complexity.

First Third (10-20 minutes)

  • Rich, earthy tones
  • Hint of spice

Second Third: (20-40 minutes)

  • Sweeter undertones of caramel and cocoa
  • Increased complexity

Final Third: (40+ minutes)

  • Flavors don’t evolve significantly
  • Slightly less exciting finish

Overall Experience (16/20)

While the Juan Lopez Seleccion Especial LCDH offers a solid smoking experience, it may not fully meet the expectations set by its exclusivity. The flavors are enjoyable but lack the progression that would elevate it into a truly memorable cigar.

Comparative Analysis

When I compare these cigars, the variety in size offers different experiences, from quick smokes to longer, more leisurely sessions. Some are priced affordably, while others command a higher price for their luxury and craftsmanship.

Pairings

Maximize the flavors of the Juan Lopez Seleccion Especial LCDH by indulging in these complementary pairings:

  • Dark Chocolate Stout: The rich, roasted malt flavors of a dark chocolate stout perfectly complement the cigar’s earthy and slightly spicy notes, while the creamy texture of the beer enhances the smoothness of the smoke.
  • Single Malt Scotch: A well-aged single malt with hints of oak, dried fruits, and light smokiness can beautifully balance the cigar's robust flavor, enhancing the peppery and cocoa undertones.
  • Spiced Tea: The warmth and complexity of spiced tea, especially blends with cinnamon and cardamom, pair wonderfully with the cigar's earthy and leathery notes, offering a comforting contrast to the smoke.

Bringing It All Together

After thoroughly enjoying the Juan Lopez Seleccion Especial LCDH, I’d rate this cigar a decent 82/100. It offers a rich, earthy profile with just the right amount of complexity from its spice and cocoa notes.

While the burn and construction are generally good, it could benefit from more consistency in the final third, where the flavors don’t evolve as much as I hoped.

Despite that, the medium-to-full strength and balanced flavors make it a great choice for any cigar lover who appreciates a classic Cuban smoke. This is definitely a cigar I'd keep in my humidor for special occasions, and it holds up well against other premium cigars in its category. Overall, a rewarding experience that’s worth revisiting.
